POKOTABI / Ryoma Restaurant
龍馬 本店
Located near Matsunoo Taisha, Ryoma Restaurant is an izakaya boasting an impressive spread that ranges from seasonal sashimi and abalone to roasted ginkgo nuts, fried specialties, noodles, and rice porridges, all served with warm hospitality until 2:00.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
When you take a seat and open the menu, the sheer variety of dishes is almost dizzying. Situated close to Matsunoo-taisha Shrine, Ryoma Restaurant is an izakaya with an extraordinarily broad repertoire, spanning bite-sized drinking snacks, pristine fish preparations, hearty meat plates, and satisfying bowls of noodles or rice to close out the meal. Spending a few unhurried moments deciding on that first round of orders is one of the distinct pleasures of beginning an evening here.
Kicking things off with fresh seafood or sashimi is always a sound approach. Seasonal abalone can be enjoyed raw as sashimi, lightly blanched, or prepared as tempura or breaded cutlets. The ocean fare runs deep, featuring pristine yellowtail alongside whole Japanese flying squid sashimi. Pair these with simple, addictive bar bites like well-salted roasted ginkgo nuts or French fries dusted with shredded seasoned kombu, and the beer or shochu flows effortlessly.
The kitchen does not stop at seafood. Substantial meat dishes, such as charred beef tongue, tender simmered kakuni pork belly, and crisp fried chicken, are prepared with equal care. Carb-heavy finales provide an equally wide playing field—from crab or maitake mushroom zosui rice porridges and marinated yellowtail rice bowls to grated-yam ramen and rich wagyu curry udon—leaving an option for whatever appetite remains.
The counter seats place you close to the energy of the grill and are comfortable for solo diners, while private rooms allow groups and families to gather around a table in a relaxed setting. With operating hours extending until 2:00 the following morning, it is a dependable spot late into the night. Because the dining room often fills up, reserving a table before you go is recommended.
